How to take care of dry nose skin to avoid injuries

The nose is a very important organ for our health. It fulfills a series of functions that, when there is a problem and is not fulfilled correctly, causes the whole body to suffer.

It allows us to breathe to get the oxygen that our body needs. Thanks to it we also perceive odors, it helps us regulate the humidity of the air we breathe. On the other hand, thanks to the mucosa and nasal hair we can filter the air, eliminating impurities, germs, irritants and dirt, so that they do not reach the inside of the organism and cause us damage.

The skin is our main protective barrier of the organism against external agents, a function that fulfills both the skin of the external area and the mucous membranes that cover the entrance holes to our body, as happens for example in the case of the nose.

In order for the skin to adequately fulfill this function, it must be healthy and adequately hydrated. A dry skin, with lack of water or lipids necessary to maintain its structure, is a more fragile skin and will have more difficulty defending ourselves. That is why it is so important to maintain an adequate level of hydration and avoid dryness.


The most common causes of nasal dryness, both external and internal, are:


The constant use of the handkerchief in colds, flu or allergic processes, causes the nasal area to dry out and even become irritated .

This occurs both with the use of tissue and comfortable and hygienic tissues, although the latter cause even more dryness.


In those places where the climate is drier it is more common for you to notice that the skin and nasal mucosa dry more easily.


The change of zones with high temperature to cold zones, as it happens in winter when we go out to the street, or the other way around as in summer when we leave the air conditioning cool to the heat of the street, produces dehydration in the skin.


Both heating and air conditioning manage to dry the environment at home, at work, etc. The nasal mucosa tends to lose moisture and dries.


Environmental pollution, dust, smoke, chlorine from swimming pools, etc. they are irritating factors that also produce dehydration.


First of all, it is important that you perform a proper nasal cleaning , both of the external skin, with a cosmetic cleanser, and of the internal area, with the use of a spray of physiological serum or seawater.

The second step would be to ensure proper hydration of the skin and nasal mucosa. The external area, in general, can be hydrated with the same product you use for the rest of your face, although on certain occasions when you notice that the skin starts to get irritated, or preventively in dry environments, it may be convenient to use a specific moisturizing balm for this area. This will help you avoid dryness and soothe or prevent irritation.

For the internal area of ​​the nose you can use the cleaning spray itself, which cools and moisturizes the mucosa. In other cases, the use of an intransal moisturizing gel is necessary.

The intake of an adequate amount of water, at least a liter and a half a day, is essential to maintain proper hydration of the body, and also of the skin.

Use a humidifier to keep the environment moist at home, especially at night, and thus prevent the nose from drying out.

Finally, you should avoid the frequent causes of dryness that we have just mentioned:

  • Abrupt changes in temperature
  • Smoke
  • Environments loaded with smoke, gases or pollution
  • Abuse of heaters and air conditioners


When the skin has already dried out, it is much more fragile and it is easier for any slight rubbing to lead to the appearance of a small wound , so it is important that you take specific care to avoid it:

  • Do not scratch or touch your nose with your fingers . The contact of the nail with the dry skin of the area will easily cause a wound.
  • Reduces irritation and rubbing . Especially the one produced by the continuous use of handkerchiefs that, if it joins the dryness they produce, is a lot of chance to irritate a wound.
  • Apply specific protective and regenerating products for the nasal area . A petroleum jelly can prevent dehydration, but it is much more appropriate that you use a cream or balsam of the nose and lips that provide hydration to the area, protect it, calm it and even promote healing in the event that there is already a small wound.
